About The Fillmore

Purchase Tickets!

The Fillmore was a dance hall operating under various names and managements - The Get Acquainted Society, Ambassador Dance Hall - through the 1930s, and a roller rink through the 1940s. In 1952, local entrepreneur Charles Sullivan began to book some of the biggest names in black music into The Fillmore. Sullivan booked West Coast tours for performers including James Brown, Bobby "Blue" Bland and Ike & Tina Turner. During the 1950s and 1960s, San Francisco gained a reputation as the preeminent Bohemian community in the United States. This reputation was never more deserved than during the mid-sixties, when the hipster of the Beat movement grew into the hippie of a more mainstream counter-culture. By the 1950s, the literary North Beach scene had given way to the emerging Haight-Ashbury, and radical politics had a niche across the Bay at the University of California at Berkeley. The line between culture and politics is easily blurred by young people in search of adventure.

The Breeders play The Fillmore
By Nirmala Nataraj (07/01/2002)

" The nine-year delay marking the period between The Breeders' pop-perfect album Last Splash and the drug-induced mishaps that put the band on hiatus should really be no surprise. After a perpetually mobile cast of characters and a few barely sustainable on-again, off-again gigs, The Breeders - fronted by twin sisters Kim and Kelley - are more or less back on the road. "

Detroit-City rockers bring their juggernaut sound to the Bay
By SFS Staff (05/25/2001)

" Webster's English Dictionary defines a simple machine as "any of various elementary mechanisms formerly considered as the elements of which all machines are composed--including the lever, the wheel and axle, the pulley, the inclined plane, the wedge, and the screw." In rock-and-roll speak, this translates into the sound of the White Stripes: raw, powerful, and 100% bullshit-free. "

Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together
Psychedelic Furs and Echo and the Bunnymen
By SFS Staff (05/03/2001)

" Delicious news for fans of the Psychedelic Furs and Echo and the Bunnymen: this Wednesday night, both bands are playing on one bill at The Fillmore. Generally speaking, writing previews for such shows usually involves a lot of guesswork. One never knows how to sell an act that has yet to perform, particularly when the bands enjoyed their heyday almost twenty years ago. "
