Editorial Review Amplifier SF Station Blows It Up By Misha Vladimirskiy (06/23/2006)" The Fillmore played host to The Fiery Furnaces on this warm night in San Francisco. The crowd was made up of hipster kids with their cool hair and slick cloths, and people that were dressed in full masquerade garb. Standing in the middle of this crowd I had a feeling this might be good one and I have to admit that it was. With their dashes of folk, garage rock and a heavy European sound, they opened my eyes and ears and made me get lost in their lyrics. " |
Editorial Review King Sunny Ade Enjoyment at the Fillmore By matthew thayer (04/15/2005)" The best experience in life for a "world music" lover like myself is to be immersed. Gnawa, the hottest, undiluted regional dance-trance music, is performed nightly in the main square of the Moroccan city Marrakech. Gamelan music always sounds sweeter on the lush island of Bali. Backpack through Eastern Europe and you may find yourself invited to dance the polka at a village wedding. At the Fillmore, we will be treated to the best of both worlds as King Sunny brings a traditional Nigerian party to one of San Francisco's best dance floors. " |
Editorial Review Handsome Boy Modeling School Schooled in the Finer Points By matthew thayer (03/25/2005)" Nathaniel Merriweather and Chest Rockwell haven't disappeared since we last heard from them in 1999. It's been a long time since the boys put out their first concept album, "So... How's Your Girl?". Chest begs to differ, "Between making the five-part video tape/DVD series, running and actually teaching at the Handsome Boy Institute, and the lecture tours -- now you're probably saying to yourself, "Wow, it came kinda quick." The quick is last years instructional long play, "White People", and our favorite teachers will lecture live at the Fillmore next week. " |
