Fifth Annual GLIDE Legacy Gala: A Love Supreme

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join the next generation of young professionals and philanthropists in supporting GLIDE's more than fifty-year legacy of love, leadership and community during the GLIDE Legacy Gala, a Love Supreme at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. This fifth annual black-tie affair is an evening of music, dance and celebration that recognizes the important work of up-and-coming change agents who are dedicated to improving the lives of others. With a hosted bar and hors d'oeuvres from some of San Francisco's finest restaurants, the evening's live entertainment will include performances from the GLIDE Ensemble and Change Band along with the groovy musical selections of DJ KingMost. KQED’s award-winning journalist Thuy Vu will act as the evening’s emcee.

During the Legacy Gala, the GLIDE Legacy Committee--a group of young social entrepreneurs-- will recognize the outstanding contributions of three architects of change who embody the passion and spirit of GLIDE's Co-Founders Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani, as well as the organization's mission. Their vision and work inspire young people across the globe to lead a life that empowers others to fulfill their greatest potential. This year, GLIDE will be honoring Pursuit of Happyness author, entrepreneur, philanthropist and single parent Christopher Gardner with the Cecil Williams Legacy Award. Doniece Sandoval, a homeless advocate and founder of Lava Mae, an organization that provides mobile showers for the homeless, will be honored with the Janice Mirikitani Legacy Award. The announcement of the Community Hero Award will be made soon.

“It is inspiring to see this group of young professionals walk the walk and get involved in philanthropy,” said GLIDE Minister of Liberation Reverend Cecil Williams. “The spirit and passion of these young philanthropists will help bring hope to those most in need,” added GLIDE Founding President Janice Mirikitani.

"The Legacy Gala is a true celebration of the enduring work of San Francisco icons Reverend Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani,” said Legacy Committee Chairman Mike Kim. “This event brings together today's young social entrepreneurs and philanthropists to honor the amazing legacy of the GLIDE Foundation. As my final year as Chairman, I intend to make it a night to remember!"

In addition, the GLIDE Legacy Committee will host an online auction fundraiser on eBay featuring a variety of unique items that offer the ultimate in music, food, wine, travel, sports and lifestyle experiences from San Francisco to New York! The auction will run July 16 through July 26, 2014 on eBay at ebay.com/glidesf.

About GLIDE
GLIDE is a beloved cultural icon and San Francisco's premiere provider of innovative social services for marginalized populations. Founded by Rev. Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani more than fifty years ago, and under the leadership of Co-Executive Directors Rita Shimmin and Kristen Growney Yamamoto, and Pastor Karen Oliveto, GLIDE offers comprehensive support services to San Francisco's poor and homeless communities, helping them to overcome the barriers of poverty, violence, addiction, dependency and low self-worth. The organization has held steady the vision of supporting and uplifting the disenfranchised through unconditional love, acceptance and respect for over five decades.

About the GLIDE Legacy Committee
The GLIDE Legacy Committee was established in 2009 by a group of young professionals who recognized an opportunity to spread the message and mission of GLIDE to their communities. The Legacy Committee’s goal is to inspire a new generation of Bay Area change-makers to continue GLIDE’s legacy of unconditional love, breaking the cycles of poverty and marginalization.

About Doniece Sandoval
Driven by a fierce belief that everyone has a right to dignity and the knowledge that access to showers and sanitation are in seriously short supply for the homeless, Doniece was compelled to start Lava Mae, an organization that provides mobile showers and toilets to the homeless.
Sandoval has orchestrated marketing, PR and development for both private and nonprofit organizations including ZERO1: The Art & Technology Network; San Jose Museum of Art; Wilson McHenry Company; Informix; DoubleClick; Toyrus.com; McGuire & Company for Coca Cola; and ACA Joe, among others. Her passion is finding unique solutions to problems that matter to her. Homelessness has been on her radar for quite some time but she was at a loss as to how to truly help-until she passed a young woman on the street crying over and over that she’d never be clean. Lava Mae is Doniece’s answer.

About Christopher Gardner
Chris Gardner is an entrepreneur, author, philanthropist and single parent whose work has been recognized by many esteemed organizations. The amazing story of Gardner’s life was published as an autobiography, The Pursuit of Happyness, in May 2006, and became a New York Times and Washington Post #1 bestseller. Gardner was also the inspiration for the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, released by Columbia Pictures in December 2006. Will Smith starred as Gardner and received Academy Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for his performance. Gardner was an associate producer on the film.
Born February 9, 1954 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Christopher Paul Gardner’s childhood was marked by poverty, domestic violence, alcoholism, sexual abuse and family illiteracy. Gardner published his autobiography out of a desire to shed light on these universal issues and show that they do not have to define you. Gardner never knew his father, and lived with his beloved mother, Bettye Jean Triplett (nee Gardner), when not in foster homes. Gardner is indebted to Bettye Jean for his success, as she provided him with strong “spiritual genetics” and taught him that in spite of where he came from, he could chart another path and attain whatever goals he set for himself. Now a successful businessman, Gardner is involved with initiatives that assist homeless families in staying intact, and that assist homeless men and women who are employed but still cannot get by.
