Father's Day

Last-Minute Ideas

Fatherís Day weekend is here. Didnít get around to making the proper arrangements yet? No need to panic, itís still possible to make popís day extra special. Here are a few last-minute ideas, some of which wonít cost you a cent!

Fatherís Day Portraits at Hayes Valley Farm
Pack your own picnic and pose for a free digital portrait at the ďfreeway food forestĒ on Dadís day! The Photo Adventure Club will be posting the photos online for you to send to whomever you please. Donít feel like packing a picnic? Watermelon is provided. If Sunday is out of the question, the farm hosts a variety of workshops and classes like the Cardboard Tube Duel Armor Workshop happening Saturday. Take a rain check and sign up for some quality Dad time!

Spa Treatments
The Diamond Massage & Wellness Center is offering Fatherís Day treatments and packages, including a Dadís Muscle Maintenance Fathers Day Massage Package, which includes three 55-minute sessions with Diamond Hot Packs (moist heat applied to tight, achy muscles to help soften the area and increase circulation, normally $20 each). The three sessions may be used any time this year to accommodate dadís schedule and will set you back $180 (save $171).

DIY Hero Kit
Handmade gifts are often the most cherished. San Francisco-based party planner Jordan Ferney (check out her incredibly inspiring design and lifestyle blog Oh Happy Day) tells you everything you need to know about creating a custom ďsuperheroĒ kit for dad in her guest entry for Alpha Mom, a site devoted to moms and moms-to-be. The concept is this: Assemble a care package/kit of goodies chosen by you from your own ďSuper Hero Supply CompanyĒ. Package dadís favorite treats in custom-made labels (templates provided). Sweet idea and easy to execute. http://alphamom.com/family-fun/holidays/diy-fathers-day-gift-superhero-craft/

Sunday Streets
Take advantage of car-free streets on the Fatherís Day edition of Sunday Streets from 10am to 3pm. Get out and enjoy a healthy fun-filled frolic with a stroll, bike ride, skate, people watching, and more. Feeling adventurous? Go for a free ride on a ĎFuncycleí bike built for seven. Free bike rentals will be provided courtesy Bay City Bike Rentals & Tours and Blazing Saddles. Childrenís events include hula hooping, yoga, science demos, and lacrosse demos. Donít miss the Slumdog Millionaire skate dance and Thriller skate dance! Check the website for schedule. http://www.sundaystreets.com

North Beach Festival
Treat dad to a good olí street fair outing at the 56th annual North Beach Festival. Itís free and runs this weekend in Little Italy. This yearís installment features over 125 arts and crafts booths, 20 gourmet food booths, three stages of live entertainment, Italian street painting, beer gardens, childrenís activities and much more.

Go Sailing
Has dad always had a hankering for sailing? Itís a little out of the city, but Spinnaker Sailing in Redwood City is offering 50% off their two-day intro to sailing class (normally $375). Make sure to ask for the ďBay Area On The Cheap special rateĒ to get the deal. The San Francisco Sailing Company is also open for business; pick from six-passenger boats for an intimate family outing or a ride on the 28-passenger capacity flagship Privateer sailing yacht. All normal rates and schedules apply.

East Bay Romps
For a change of scenery, head over to the Chabot Space & Science Centerís Fatherís Day Brunch at the Starlite Bistro, followed by exploration of interactive exhibits, planetarium shows, and telescope viewings. Theyíre also hosting a Fatherís Day Solar Car Challenge, in which teams work together to design, build, and race Solar Lego cars for $10 per child, plus general admission.

If Dad is more musically inclined, treat him to a recital celebrating Fatherís Day and benefiting the Oakland East Bay Symphony on Fatherís Day at the Eden Church of Christ in Hayward at 3pm. Fourth in the churchís Performing Arts Concert Series: Art for Goodnessí Sake, this recital will feature Angela Eden Moser (soprano) and Paul Murray (bass baritone).

Butchery Classes
Does he love meat? Sign dad up for one of 4505 Meatsí upcoming classes; pick from Sausage Making 101, Whole Hog Butchery or Whole Lamb Butchery in the month of June. Sadly at publication these classes may all be full, but make sure to keep a close watch for future classes.
