Maria Porges at Sanchez Art Center

Sanchez Art Center is pleased to present three new exhibitions opening July 8. The Main Gallery features work by Maria Porges, whose exhibition is titled F(r)iction. Showing concurrently in East Gallery is Random Encounters from Collage Underground, and Sign of the Times by Art Guild of Pacifica. All three run through August 7, with a free opening reception from 7 to 9 pm, Friday, July 8. Live music will be provided by guitarists Ken Brown and Adam Dohner.

Maria Porges is an artist, writer, and Associate Professor at California College of the Arts. Among the many awards and grants she has received are a SECA award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and two residencies at the Headlands Center for the Arts. Porges’ current work explores books as both physical material and subject matter, and is informed by her complicated, lifelong relationship with the printed word. In a new installation created for this exhibition, also titled F(r)iction, the idea of words hidden inside of other words, “like secret weapons or ghosts,” is combined with fragments of books as Porges examines the place where image and text collide as they make new meanings. In another installation, Editor’s Arsenal, Porges uses poetic injunctions to suggest ways to repair disordered meanings and lost ideas.

This show also includes some of Porges’ Shortest Stories: a series of collages accompanied by short texts. A primary source of inspiration—for both her sculpture and collage work—has been the library of English classics in mediocre German translations left behind by her Austrian grandmother. These unwanted volumes are printed in a Gothic script now legible to few. Once destined for landfill, they have taken on a new life as art material, but for Porges, their reclamation as art is bittersweet, reminding us of the decreasing role of books in a digital world.

Maria Porges will give a free Artist Talk on closing Sunday, August 7, at 3:30 pm.

Showing concurrently in the East Gallery is Random Encounters, an exhibition of work from the Collage Underground. These nine artists came together randomly via a class on deconstructing collage taught by Peter Foley. The artists, all women, bonded over a shared vision of honoring abandoned and discarded materials of humble origin, weathered by time or circumstance, and exploring the way these materials interact and intersect with one another. Their appreciation of collage as a medium calls them to see meaning and mystery in the shape, form, texture, and patina of these materials, and their work creates narratives that elevate the raw materials from the ordinary to works of art.

In West Gallery, the Art Guild of Pacifica presents Sign of the Times, a themed group exhibition. The phrase “sign of the times” often means an indication of a coming event, but it can also include other meanings, such as harbinger, omen, or hint. The response from Art Guild artists will certainly make for an interesting and thought-provoking show.

Come to the July 8 opening prepared to make some art of your own by participating in our Community Art Project, titled Coastal Colors. We provide the panels and the paints, and will display your creations in the East Gallery foyer at Sanchez Art Center.

Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Blvd in Pacifica, about a mile east of Highway 1. Following opening night, the galleries are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 1–5 pm, and by appointment, through August 7. For more information call 650.355.1894 or visit SanchezArtCenter.org.
