Everything's A Thing

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Incline Gallery presents a visual conversation between artists Matthew Gottschalk and Matthew Weston Taylor curated by Sholeh Asgary. The title of the exhibition serves as a unifying gesture to the sense of fragmentation of objects and images in both artists’ works, while simultaneously prompting questions of their embodiment. Matthew Gottschalk recreates iconic objects in various materials from a bygone era, such as carved wooden cassette tapes and superhero body parts, and in doing so, “memorializes the past while solidifying the present.” Matthew Weston Taylor builds upon a personal lexicon of two-dimensional images in oil paintings on panel, traversing his own pictorial history “towards a search for that which feels both true and honest.” By creating and re creating objects and images, the artists shift personal and cultural symbols that are at once nostalgic, yet present, through expressions that seek to provide tangible form to some of the more fleeting things in our lives.
Exhibition runs June 12, 2014 - July 11, 2014
