Evah Fan: A Waffle Lot
May 14-June 25, 2015

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 14, 6-9PM
Legion, 679 Clay Street, San Francisco, CA

Legion is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of recent works by Oakland-based artist Evah Fan. A Waffle Lot features spare, intimately-scaled gouache paintings on wood panels and paper, and new prints, zines, and multiples.

Evah Fan’s subjects are often adrift, anchored only by a few key props. They may be in the middle of a calisthenics routine, vacuuming, discovering new uses for old chopsticks, or cutting up colored bits of paper for a collage; you might even catch them flossing or delicately hanging by a thread. Fan’s players may be out of orbit, but seem blissfully unaware of this, being so deeply absorbed in their activities. Sometimes, they are grounded by the graphic markings of sports: a basketball backboard, soccer field, Scrabble board. And yet, the tiny figures have little use for rules and boundaries, preferring to freestyle and devise new ways of amusing themselves. These busy bodies are meticulously outfitted in a variety of uniforms, pantaloons, periwigs, and curiously-shaped dresses.

Fan’s lifelong addiction to Mad Libs has fueled an ongoing concern with words and phrases and the possibilities to redefine them: the artist’s name pronounced in Swedish means “what the hell.” When the paintings in A Waffle Lot and their titles are approached as linguistic puzzles, plot twists, new meanings and alternative narratives emerge.

Evah Fan is an artist and illustrator based in Oakland, CA. Fan received a BFA from Pratt Institute, and an MFA from Konstfack/University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, Sweden. Recent illustrations have appeared in Pop-Up Magazine, Monocle, The New York Times, Sony Music, Bloomberg, Newsweek, Nylon, GQ, and The Believer. Fan has also collaborated with Little Otsu, Mogu and Hansel from Basel. Evah Fan is represented by Galerie LJ in Paris, France, and will have a solo exhibition at VVG in Taipei, Taiwan in late 2015.

Legion is a contemporary lifestyle boutique representing independent designers, many local and exclusive to the area, including Cold Picnic, Kowtow, First Base, Feral Childe, Ilana Kohn, Kaarem, Ben Medansky, Micaela Greg, and Young in the Mountains. Founded by Bay Area native and fashion writer Sydney Pfaff, Legion also stocks a selection of home design, paper goods, and books. Evah Fan: A Waffle Lot is curated by Alice Wu, and on view May 14-June 25 in Legion's gallery space.
