French Couture at Target Prices
by grace chen on Nov 16, 2007
New York, Milan, Paris and London all find themselves as spotlights for the catwalk circuits of any major design house. Other cities fetch some flash such as Los Angeles but San Francisco? Not so much. Californian denizens such as Peter Som and Derek Lam flock to New York to define au courant looks for Bill Blass and TodĎs, respectively. Now Erin Fetherston has fled the coop too.
After graduating from University of California, Berkeley, the California native set off to Paris to enroll at Parsons School of Design. Within a year of her arrival, Fetherston had introduced her first couture collection at Paris Haute Couture Spring 2005. It was heralded as ďan American triumph of the French Couture.Ē Today she is one of the ten finalists for the top prize of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)/Vogue Fashion Fund which has launched many young and new designers.
Already her success seems secured. Her collection of sensible girlish styles makes its way to the States and is set to release at Target stores nationwide on November 18th. The exclusive collection features fashions that fit perfectly for the holiday season and within the holiday budget. Items range from $7.99 to $89.99.
A number of playful silhouettes emerge as if Alice had stepped out of her closet in Wonderland. There is the red silk charmeuse Peter Pan Collar dress ($59.99) or the cream chiffon dress with velvet trim ($44.99) that play up Fetherstonís girly style. Fetherston fans can also find her penchant for jumper dresses in the collection. The new version is a red corduroy ($29.99) worn over a grey turtleneck with balloon sleeves ($19.99). The big heart-shaped handbag ($29.99) is my must-have along with key separates such as a white gauze blouse ($24.99) and red velvet shorts ($24.99). Actually any one of these outfits could dazzle its way to a Mad Hatter Tea Party.
The collection features classic outfits as well such as a layered gold chiffon dress ($44.99) and a smoking black velvet pantsuit set ($4.99 and $39.99). The palette revolves around black, white, gold and red which play well into holiday and everyday dressing. There are also plenty of gift ideas that include basics such as chunky cardigans, wool coats, wrap sweaters and mini skirts. Accessories accent many of the looks. They include headbands in red satin or black jacquard which has become a key print in many fall looks and interior designs. Knitted scarves with heart ends ($14.99) doll up any look.
Ms. Fetherston is the ninth designer who is part of the GO initiative at Target, which provides runway looks from renowned designers all over the world. Target designs are yet to be had in the 415. The nearest Target is in Colma and Daly City. Really though, itís a small price to pay considering that these high fashion looks donít come with high fashion prices. The Bay Area may have lost some of its creative talent but it certainly hasnít lost its means to both appreciate and find it.
