EDF Talk: Moving from Burden to Opportunity

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at EDF San Francisco Office (see times)
For nearly 1 in 3 American families, simply paying a monthly energy bill may mean not paying for groceries and daycare. A normal household pays less than 6% of annual income on energy, but poor families across the country can pay up to 25%.

Join Jayant Kairam of EDF’s Clean Energy program to discuss the challenge of energy poverty, and the work EDF has been doing in California and other states to empower communities and reduce the energy burden for the most vulnerable. Leveraging the power of local partnerships, Jayant’s team pursues place-based collaborations that show the value of various clean energy investments like energy efficiency, on-bill financing, performance metrics and community solar to create access for disadvantaged communities to participate in the clean energy economy.

Jayant Kairam is the Director of Partnerships and Interim California Director for EDF’s Clean Energy Program. Before joining EDF, Jayant was Chief Operating Officer at the New York Business Integrity Commission. In this role, he oversaw the agency's policy portfolio and spearheaded successful reforms to the commercial waste sector that improved air quality, recycling rates and consumer protections for New York City residents and businesses. Jayant worked as a Senior Policy Advisor to the Deputy Mayor of Operations in New York City, where he managed a wide range of policy issues from municipal innovation to urban sustainability. He also served as a US Peace Corps Volunteer from 2004 — 2006 in Cape Verde. He has a Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School and a Bachelors from Vassar College.
