"Dona Nobis Pacem" plus a World Premiere!

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The San Francisco Choral Society, under the artistic direction of Robert Geary, will perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ "Dona Nobis Pacem" and the World Premiere of Stacy Garrop’s "Creation Of The World" on Saturday, November 15 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, November 16 at 4:00 pm, at Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco.

The Choral Society will be accompanied by the California Chamber Symphony. Maestro Geary has tapped Soprano Jennifer Paulino; Mezzo-soprano Betany Coffland; Tenor Brian Thorsett and Bass-baritone Nikolas Nackley as his soloists for these concerts. The Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir will also be featured.

"Dona Nobis Pacem" premiered in 1936. Setting biblical and poetic text to music, Vaughn Williams composed it as a passionate plea for peace, and it was performed at countless festivals and concerts in the ominous years leading up to World War II. The cantata opens with a soprano solo, one voice offering an apprehensive “Agnus Dei.” The chorus joins in a fervent cry for peace. In answer, distant drums sound…..a harbinger of war. From there, "Dona Nobis Pacem" takes us on a heartfelt journey that ends with hopeful optimism.

Composer Stacy Garrop is a rising star in the field. Her "Creation of the World" is the first part of "Terra Nostra," a three movement oratorio commissioned by the San Francisco Choral Society in collaboration with the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir. The completed piece will be premiered in its entirety in 2015.

"Terra Nostra" focuses on the relationship between our planet and mankind, how this relationship has shifted over time, and how we can re-establish a harmonious balance. This concept is presented over the course of the three parts. "Part I: Creation of the World" explores various creation myths from different cultures, culminating in a joyous celebration of the beauty of our planet.
