Sanchez Art Center is honored to present an exhibition of artworks by Ward Schumaker, titled do | undo. The exhibition opens Friday, February 27, with a reception from 7 to 9 pm, and is on view through March 29. Running concurrently are Printmakers – SF Art Institute and Apolitical, Be Political from the Art Guild of Pacifica. Michael Slaughter will provide piano music for the reception.
Ward Schumaker’s exhibition, curated by Jerry Barrish, includes large acrylic paintings, small collages, and mixed media works on paper, as well as some small sculptures. Several works, such as the small collages and the larger mixed media works Disappear for a While and Red Telephone, will be shown for the first time here at Sanchez. The hallmark of Schumaker’s work is layering with paint, mixed media, text, and abstract patterns. As the artist says, his work involves a great deal of “painting in and painting out, doing and undoing, making marks and erasing them,†hence the exhibit title do | undo. The effect can be mesmerizing, and yet Schumaker’s works are ultimately quite simple and straightforward—in a meandering sort of way. In his work you will find a refreshing sense of humor and the feeling of storytelling, without any of the guideposts of conventional stories.
Schumaker has shown in New York, San Francisco, Shanghai, UC Berkeley, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Charleston, Miami, and Nashville, and has been collected widely. In 2013 Jack Fischer Gallery in SF mounted Schumaker’s solo show titled Years of Pretty. See more of his work at https://www.warddraw.com. In the East Gallery, Timothy Berry, SF Art Institute professor, has curated a show of work by his printmaking students, titled simply Printmakers – San Francisco Art Institute. The printmaking department at SFAI offers instruction in process and technique in a wide range of media. A full program of instruction in artists’ books is also offered. The current exhibit includes etchings, screen prints, lithographs, relief prints, monoprints/types, some with elements of digital printing, and many which are multi-disciplined. Included are some compelling, large black-and-white prints by David Tim, The Neighborhood and Self-Expression, as well as many smaller works. Curator Timothy Berry (www.timothyberryart.com) recently soloed at Lobby Gallery in San Francisco, and will show at Peninsula Museum of Art in Burlingame this spring.
Apolitical, Be Political is the title and theme of the Art Guild of Pacifica’s group show in the West Gallery. Expect some thought-provoking, even occasionally irreverent, artworks as Art Guild members share their perspectives on all matters political—or not!
