Get “deep” with scientific and artistic perspectives on the ocean presented in partnership with MEDIATE and The Bold Italic as part of Soundwave’s SonicLAB series. Don’t miss a talk by National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Sylvia A. Earle, who the Library of Congress has dubbed a “living legend” for her work as an oceanographer, explorer, and leader in the government and non-profit sectors.  Check out a real remote operated underwater vehicle (ROV) used for exploration by Marine Applied Research and Exploration (MARE), and “fly” mini-ROVs in a pool courtesy of Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE). Hear from Ben Davis, one of the creators behind The Bay Lights, the world’s largest LED light sculpture now gracing the Bay Bridge. Academy scientist Gary Williams will introduce you to cold water corals, which survive at depths beyond 2,000 meters.  Plus, work with plastic pollution research and education organization 5 Gyres Institute to build and race your own mini-raft from repurposed materials, and talk with Ocean Conservancy about why California’s Marine Protected Areas work.
