December Hafle: Winter Treats and Arab Beats

On December 6th, 2014, 6 Wallenberg High School youth organizers will host their first December Hafle: Winter Treats and Arab Beats, 12:00-4:00pm, in SOMA Food Truck Park, featuring none other than Remi Kanazi, DJ Emancipacion, ExcentriK, and more. It is Free, open to the community,and family friendly.

These 6 youth initiated an Arab Awareness and Education campaign 5 months ago, a project funded through the Youth Empowerment Fund of San Francisco, to dispel stereotypes and anti-Arab Racism. They set up a website, http://www.truearabs6.net/, highlighting youth in their community, and this is their culminating project. Kemi Kanazi is a poet, writer, and activist based in New York City. He is the author of Poetic Injustice: Writings on Resistance and Palestine (RoR Publishing, 2011) and the editor of Poets For Palestine (Al Jisser Group, 2008). His political commentary has been featured by news outlets throughout the world, including Al Jazeera English, GRITtv with Laura Flanders, and BBC Radio. http://www.poeticinjustice.net/

DJ Emancipacion is a U.S. born Egyptian Cultural Worker who draws inspiration for her musical meanderings from people’s movements for freedom and liberation. Her sets take you on a journey through Africa (her homeland) via Oakland, tracing tribal roots, future dubs, and lots of soul. She has been a proud member of the San Francisco Bay Area dance scene for over 15 years. https://www.djemancipacion.com/

Excentrik (Tarik Kazaleh) is a Palestinian-American producer, composer and MC from San Francisco, CA. Hailing from a musical family, Excentrik began playing Guitar and Arabic Tabla in 1992. He began producing Hip Hop beats in 1996 and went on to perform with some of the dopest MC’s in the Bay Area and Detroit. Furthering his passion for music, Excentrik went on to study Oud and Arabic Maqam (Modes which are the basis for Oud improvisation) and eventually studied music theory and free improvisation with Josh Allen (from the Berkeley Jazz School). http://www.zatoonrecords.com/excentrik/
