December Concert Highlights

Ring in the Holidays

As the year comes to an end, everyone (including many performers) takes a break from their work to enjoy the holiday season. Before the lull, there are plenty of great shows all over the Bay Area, and SF Station has the perfect present for you — a list of all those nice shows.

December 1st: Zappa Plays Zappa at The Warfield
The late great Frank Zappa lives on with his eldest son’s tribute band. The band is combination of some of Zappa’s original band members with some relatively unknown musicians, but does it matter? You’ll be hearing Frank “freakin” Zappa all over again!

December 3rd: People Under The Stairs at Slim’s
This Los Angeles hip hop and group makes wintertime bearable with tracks like “Acid Raindrops” that are relaxing, not damp and bothersome.

December 4th: Sic Alps at Rickshaw Stop
When we interviewed Sonic Youth they lauded Sic Alps, who were then opening for the group at the Fillmore. Sic Alps now headline their own show, a benefit concert for the mother of a band member in Big Eagles (also performing), who is suffering from cancer.

December 5th: Leonard Cohen at Paramount Theater
First off, the man is a living classic. His voice alone carries in a way that only Johnny Cash might compare. Couple these with the majestic Paramount Theater and you’re sure to have an unparalleled experience.

December 10th: Albino! at New Parish
The afro-funk flavor Albino! returns to the stage of New Parish, featuring again, David Satori of Beats Antique. Last time this magical union happen, a sold-out crowd begged for more. Put on your dancing shoes, and get ready this one will be hot!

December 13th: Tame Impala at The Independent
One of this year’s biggest buzz bands, Tame Impala will grace the Independent all the way from Australia. The group is perfect for fans of fuzzed psych rock.

December 15th: Brother Ali at The Independent
There are few emcees these days that can discuss serious issues like race and economics without sounding preachy, and Brother Ali is one of them. His latest album, Us, like all of his past albums, offers great examples of wise storytelling rap with jamming beats.

December 17th: Vandals Winter Formal at Slim’s
A holiday tradition at Slim’s, the Vandals Winter Formal is the perfect sendoff before diving headfirst into the holiday madness. Whether you are naughty or nice, your ears will be ringing by the end of the night.
