Castro Theatre Opening Night Schedule

August 9
Th 5:15p: Happy Birthday, Wanda June
Directed by Mark Robson; Cast: Rod Steiger, Susannah York, William Hickey
USA, 1971, 105 mins.
35MM PRINT! NEVER RELEASED ON VIDEO OR DVD!
Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. 1922-2007. So it goes. Our curtain rises on the only (as far as we know) 35mm print of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WANDA JUNE starring Rod Steiger, Susannah York and William Hickey. Never released on DVD or videotape and rediscovered in the Studio’s vault; this is an historic occasion for fans of Vonnegut and unseen cinematic treasures. After eight years, Penelope Ryan (Susannah York) learned to accept the death of her husband. She moved on, got an education, raised their son and got engaged after Harold (Rod Steiger) disappeared in the jungles of the Amazon and never returned. One day he returns with his A-Bomb dropping sidekick Looseleaf Harper (William Hickey), and discovers that everything has changed. In Heaven above, Wanda June plays shuffleboard with Jesus.

7:30p: Big Bang Love, Juvenile A
Directed by Takashi Miike
Cast: Ryuhei Matsuda, Masanobu Ando, Renji Ishibashi; Japan, 2006, 85 mins.
In Japanese with English subtitles
DEAD CHANNELS kicks into high gear with something completely different from the notorious (and fantastically prolific) Takashi Miike: a surreal, arthouse science fiction, boys-in-prison nod to Jean Genet. BIG BANG LOVE, JUVENILE A played to wide critical acclaim at the Berlin and Toronto Film Festivals and we are delighted to present it in San Francisco. Jun, an employee in a gay bar, kills a customer who sexually assaults him. While being transported to jail, he meets Shiro, another young prisoner who displays his brute force from the beginning. The timid Jun is attracted to his intensity—until one of them dies, and the mystery deepens.

9:30p: Postal
Directed by Uwe Boll; Cast: Zack Ward, Dave Foley, Larry Thomas; Germany /Canada, 2007, 102 mins. US Premiere! Director and Cast in attendance
POSTAL delivers exactly what it promises: it’s a laugh-out-loud, blacker-than-pitch anarchic satire that lines up our sacred cows and slaughters them. Notorious director (and internet-critic boxing sensation) Uwe Boll’s hilarious new movie is an outrageous, politically incorrect, roller-coaster ride—with scenarios ripped screaming from the headlines (and something to offend everyone). Uncle Dave (Foley from THE KIDS IN THE HALL and NEWSRADIO) leads a Doomsday Cult whose fund-raising efforts run afoul of Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban—currently headquartered behind a convenience store. Both factions target a shipment of International Superstar Verne Troyer’s Krotchy dolls. Elsewhere, Postal Dude is having a really bad day. He catches his morbidly obese wife rocking the trailer with their hillbilly landlord and all Hell breaks loose. And POSTAL is much smarter than it first appears—which never hurts.
