David Gans Performs at Duende

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Multidimensional "solo electric" singer-songwriter David Gans will perform at Oakland's most delicious venue, Duende, on Thursday, January 8. The evening will feature an acoustic opening set by Gans and his longtime friend and performing partner, Eric Rawlins.

Gans and Rawlins have been making music together, mostly at parties and occasionally in public, for more than 20 years. They released a duo album, Home By Morning, in 1997 and followed it up in 2011 with Desert Wind, Rollin' River, recorded in David's living room by Stephen Barncard, whose resume includes the Grateful Dead's American Beauty and David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name...

The duo's performances include original compositions by both men and a selection of favorite songs by Nanci Griffith, Kate Wolf, Gram Parsons, and other Americana icons. The emphasis is on the songs and a warm vocal blend.

A David Gans "solo electric" performance is likely to consist of several elements: country-blues-style fingerpicking; loop-based improvisations created live in the moment; sweetly-sung ballads, original or borrowed; Grateful Dead songs reinterpreted to suit his voice and guitar; wry observations of the music-festival subculture and the larger world; soulful and passionate political commentary; favorites from the folk-rock canon of the last 50 years. Mix and match - it's never the same show twice, but it's always worth a listen.
