Darryl Sapien: Out of this World

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at The Bonnafont Gallery (see times)
The Philippe Bonnafont Gallery proudly presents the work of inter-disciplinary artist Darryl Sapien. This new collection of original paintings and mixed-media sculptures will open at the gallery on Saturday, May 2, 2015, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The exhibition will run through Sunday, May 31, 2015.

Appropriating images from the Hubble Space Telescope, Out of this World explores the interconnectedness between the quotidian and the sublime. Sapien uses his signature wordplay and social commentary to bring new life to found objects, sharing a unique perspective on the infinite and man’s place in the universe. In this exploration into the heavens, Sapien not only reveals a fresh interpretation of the Hubble images of long-ago worlds, but he also constructs a new, contemporary mythology where muse and everyday detritus can be one in the same.

“Much of my work over the decades is concerned with elevating the cliché to an archetype or, if you will, the transfiguration of the commonplace,” Sapien explains. “With this body of work, I am communicating these ideas to my audience by uniting images from the macrocosm with objects from the microcosm of our daily lives. In so doing, I can show how a simple wheelbarrow can become a window into the infinite, or a temple to my personal muse.”

With both an MFA and BFA in sculpture from San Francisco Art Institute, Darryl Sapien uses the found object as metaphor, revealing new interpretations while retaining the significant vestiges of its former function. His works can also be seen in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, SFMOMA, Berkeley Art Museum, OMCA, and other public collections.

To complement the exhibit, there will also be a evening of video screenings of Sapien’s performance art works including The Sapiad, 2014 and Son of War Games, 2013 on Saturday, May 16th at 6 PM and a closing reception on May 31st from 2–5 PM.

Gallery hours are weekends, 2–5 PM or by appointment. Please call 415-751-7118
