The Mill Valley Chamber Music Society presents Cuarteto Casals in concert Sunday, March 1, 2015. The internationally acclaimed quartet will perform a program featuring works by Hayden and Brahms.
The Cuarteto Casals, the acclaimed Spanish string quartet (featuring Vera Martínez Mehner, violin; Abel Tomàs, violin; Jonathan Brown, viola; and Arnau Tomàs, cello) is based at l'Auditori in Barcelona, where all four members reside and teach at the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya.
The quartet achieved international acclaim when it won first prize at the 2000 London International String Quartet Competition and then at the 2002 International Brahms Competition in Hamburg. In recognition of Cuarteto Casals' growing international profile they were honored with Spain's Premio Nacional de Música (National Music Award) in 2006. A prize from the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust in London in 2008 enabled the quartet to purchase a matching set of classical period bows.
The quartet is recognized as the first Spanish string quartet with an international profile honored with the Premio Nacional de Música and the Premi Ciutat Barcelona. The quartet has accompanied the King of Spain on diplomatic visits and performed on the peerless collection of decorated Stradivarius instruments in the Royal Palace in Madrid.
Cuarteto Casals has performed at the world’s most prestigious concert halls including Carnegie Hall and often appears on television and radio throughout Europe and North America.
