Opening reception and artist talk: Thursday, 3/3/2016, 6:30 pm - the Photographer will be present at the exhibition opening
Andrea Diefenbach describes in her series "Land ohne Eltern" (Country without Parents) the life choices faced by migrant workers from the Republic of Moldova, one of the poorest countries in Europe. In her photographs, the distance between the two utterly different worlds of the children left at home and the parents working in far-off lands becomes almost painfully tangible.
The exhibition is based on Diefenbach's own experience when she was standing in front of the first grade of a school in a small village in south-east of Moldova in 2008. The teacher asked "whose parents are living in Italy?". About two-third of the children signed up.
"It is something else to read all the statistics on labor migration or remittances than standing in front of thirty six-year-olds with wool hats in a cold classroom knowing these children haven't seen their parents for years, because they are working 2000 km away as a cleaning lady or harvest helper."
Andrea Diefenbach, born 1974 has been working since her studies at the FH Bielefeld as a freelance photographer and has brought out exhibitions with a wide range of issues so far. Besides "Children Without Parents" she also accomplished exhibitions like: "Jewish Elderly Home", "Wives of Rabbis" and "AIDS in Odessa". Amongst other prices, she received the PDN Photography Annual Award in 2013.
