THIS EVENT HAS ENDED
A remake of his film High Sierra (1941), Walsh's noir western inhabits a space not far removed from that of his broody Pursued (1947). As in High Sierra, here we have the tale of an aging criminal (Joel McCrea) convinced to pull one last heist. But of course things go awry: there's double crossing, a love triangle (Dorothy Malone and especially Virginia Mayo do great work here), and the general sense that the past is an inescapable force that must be reckoned with. Ghosts haunt the landscape of Colorado Territory, proving that the shadows of postwar Hollywood stretched far beyond the dark city. (1949, 94 min, 35mm)

Bay Area Now 7: Invasion of the Cinemaniacs!

From rabid film buffs, to critics, and beyond, the Bay Area is home to some of the most dedicated cinephiles on the planet. This series pays tribute to a variety of these unsung local heroes, who have selected this superb series of "deep cuts." These are people who are hugely invested in film exhibition, but generally behind-the-scenes. You might know some of them by name, but mostly they will seem, hmmm, strangely...familiar... If you spend any amount of time at the Castro, PFA, Stanford Theater, YBCA, etc, you'll recognize them. They're always there, lurking in the shadows, keeping cinema alive.
