Hawk Jones
Swaggadifferent is the title of the first song off of math rock band Hawk Jones' EP Que Rico! The song title alone describes them best; a group that just has a different kind of swagger. Hawk Jones' songs take on an elaborate layering of synths drums, and guitar that slowly build up in a harmonic dissonance. The trio (Joshua Fairfield, Brandon Foss, and Rene Francis Jr.) resides in San Jose. They've already played throughout the South Bay's hot spots for up and coming bands, at The Blank Club, Cafe Stritch, and at San Pedro Square. Now they make a stop at Lido for a late night show. Luum
They've been a band less than a year, but already Southern California's Luum have released an impressive handful of raw, art-punk EPs. One, titled simply "demos" has the unsettling album cover of an extremely emaciated man in a hospital bed with the text that says "Bryan Died Age 34". It's the same uncomfortable, yet provocative feeling that this image stirs up, that the music also produces. It's loud, dark and angry, but it's not clear what exactly they are so angry about. They weave in enough distorted minor chords and unfiltered rage to cause internal dissonance in anyone with a soul. (Aaron Carnes)
