More Choices than Just Itsy-Bitsy, Teeny-Weeny and Yellow Polka-Dots
By Michelle Sieling (Jul 6, 2007)
While riding my bike a couple months ago down 18th Street, I spotted a bikini store on the left hand side of the street. I really couldn’t believe there was a bikini store in the Mission. Natives and visitors alike are well aware what kind of weather San Francisco is known for, and it’s not beach weather. More

Spanish Fashion House Arrives
By grace chen (Nov 4, 2005)
The mega-clothing chain from Spain finally erected its first California outpost near Union Square where it shares the same block as fashion heavyweights, Giorgio Armani and Burberry. Luckily for shoppers, unlike her neighbors, Zara brandishes its latest runway looks minus the latest Euro exchange rates for women, men and children. More

Brrrrr…It's Cold Outside
By grace chen (Jan 28, 2005)
Weak -- that's me as I complain about our "winter". Try shivering lows in the 50's (I keep my apartment at a round 80 degrees). Worse, if the Groundhog sees its shadow on February 2nd, we may not only see more days of winter but also freezing temperatures that drop as low as the 40's! More

British Fashion Queen Then & Now
By grace chen (Apr 12, 2007)
A designer who can understand punk and proper Saville Row suiting deserves a crown. Let that queen of fashion be Vivienne Westwood. Through June 10th, the de Young Museum presents a 30-plus-year retrospective of Ms. Westwood’s iconic looks that start with bondage latex suits and anarchy themed shirts in the 70s to 21st century tailored gowns cut in intriguing proportions and mixed materials. More

True Vintage From All Over Under One Roof
By Jialin Luh (Mar 13, 2008)
A good day garage- or estate-sale hopping can yield fabulous finds. There is something special about scrounging a couple hours away through someone else’s junk for gems, kind of like the giddy feeling you might get finding one or two prized records after a long crate-digging session. But let’s face it: not everyone is up to the task. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Vintage Fashion Expo might be the answer vintage fashion lovers seek: this popular show brings together dealers from across the country under one roof for a weekend of treasure hunting that kicks off tomorrow morning. More

Easy as 1-2-3
By SFS Staff (Aug 19, 2004)
Shopping is as easy as 1-2-3. That's "123" as in the address 123 2nd Street where a former Financial District copy shop has given way to Vex, a spacious white loft which showcases the latest men's and women's fashions from Europe. Here you'll find simple but edgy pieces with affordable price points. More

A Playground in the Haight
By Jialin Luh (Dec 31, 2004)
What do Alice in Wonderland, The Beatles, and an urban fashion/art outfit have in common? Try a walrus. That's right, if you're keen to your surroundings you may have caught the easily recognizable walrus silhouette slapped on many a wall and street sign. According to an unnamed source, the significance of the walrus is its representation of not a single individual, but a faceless collective of people, which embodies Upper Playground's operation. More

Shopping For The Gift That Gives Twice
By Michelle Sieling (Aug 18, 2006)
A couple weeks ago, as I walked down Castro Street, my eye was drawn to two skateboards in a shop window, one blue and one green, both with a simple white Hawaiian floral pattern. I stopped and scanned the front window display of a modern home wares and gifts store. I was hooked. I’ve been getting my hair cut at a salon near this store, Under One Roof on Castro Street near 18th Street, for the past year, but somehow I had passed by without ever noticing it before. I’m not sure how that is possible, but it’s true. A place like this should not be ignored. More
Clothing & Accessories

There’s a whole new world of outfits and accessories to covet when you have a baby. And even if you don’t have a tot and aren’t familiar with Baby Bjorns or the latest model of Bugaboo strollers, you’re bound to have a friend expecting, or burping a little one as we speak. A few great local baby shops will help you rise to hip parent status, or even favorite godparent. More

Fashionably Functional Bags
By Jialin Luh (Apr 14, 2006)
From its conception in New York in the 50s to present day, the messenger bag has evolved from a drab component of a workman's ensemble to a unisex must-have fashion accessory, all the while never losing its functionality. In 1989 San Francisco bike messenger Rob Honeycutt invested $200 for a used Singer sewing machine, fabric and buckles to craft 50 no-name black handlebar bags he dubbed Scumbags, which would later bear the brand name Timbuk2. Fast forward to April 2006: the first Timbuk2 brick and mortar store opens its doors to the public after more than 15 years of providing bags to a growing loyal user base. More
