Borrowing is No Longer Just for Bookworms
By Michelle Sieling (Apr 17, 2009)
Imagine you had a really cool bohemian aunt who had traveled the globe and every day you could go over to her house and lounge on her couch, play with her little dog, and borrow whatever you liked from her closet…for a monthly fee. That’s what La Library, which opened in February on Guerrero Street between 15th and 16th streets in the Mission is like. More

A Swede Welcome
By grace chen (Mar 6, 2009)
A shake-up of sorts rippled through Union Square. The Virgin Megastore whose café I duck into for shopping breaks will be no more as it closes its doors in April. Further along Market Street, Shoe Pavilion’s lights are off along with a number of other dark storefronts scattered in a vibrant shopping destination for locals and tourists alike. In its wake, though, old spaces change hands and revive. More

Raw Talent in Raw Times
By grace chen (Feb 20, 2009)
The outlook appears bleak in the fashion world. Tales are leaden with designers left in precarious situations as they seek financial backers. Headlines lament established designers reigning in their runway productions. Then there are the obituaries of retail shops and those in the apparel trade who are going out of business. Amidst this harsh economic environment there is a bit of an oasis -- Indie Industries. More

Beautiful Blooms and Graceful Gifts
By Michelle Sieling (Feb 13, 2009)
Once again we’ve reached the time of year for red, white and pink window displays of boxes of chocolates and bouquets of flowers. The rose of course is the flower commonly associated with Valentine’s Day. Dating back to the 17th century, the theory goes that the red rose was chosen as it was the favorite flower of Venus. A single perfect red rose combined with baby’s breath is called a “signature rose” by florists and is the most common way that people demonstrate their love florally on Valentine’s Day. More

Popular Canadian Chain Opens Doors to West Coast
By grace chen (Jan 16, 2009)
Canada just got closer. The latest addition to the Westfield San Francisco Centre is Aritzia, a womenswear boutique that features a mix of modern classics from its own labels as well as others. The clothing chain hails from Vancouver, British Columbia and adds a new dimension to the well-represented European counterparts such as H&M, Zara, Reiss and Karen Millen. More

Blending Brooklyn with the Bay
By Michelle Sieling (Jan 9, 2009)
What does Brooklyn style look like to you? People sometimes forget that Brooklyn is a big place, with styles shifting from neighborhood to neighborhood. When I think of Brooklyn, a few images different come to mind: a Williamsburg hipster, a Hasidic Jew in Borough Park, and even a Russian woman in a babushka in Brighton Beach’s “Little Odessa”. More

Fashion that pays to be fashionable
By grace chen (Jan 2, 2009)
Fashion forwards finally can invest in pieces that give back. Philanthropist, a spacious 1,600 square foot boutique nestled in Presidio Heights, houses everything from high-end runway pieces from New York to contemporary basics from Los Angeles. All proceeds from the sale of any item on the floor benefit a select charity, which like fashion, changes with each season. For this fall-winter The Raphael House is the beneficiary. More

Occasions For Being Merry and Maybe Even Finding Gifts
By Jialin Luh (Nov 28, 2008)
The winter holiday season can be at turns trying and filled with merriment. There is much to stress about -- which holiday party invitations to accept or decline, what dish to bring to the holiday gathering, how to stave off the pounds, how to balance your gift-giving spirit with the desire to stay on top of your finances and how to survive family gatherings. With incessant reminders and proclamations about the dismal state of the economy, San Francisco has not been spared from the crunch. But our vibrant city has much to offer this holiday season to lift you out of the blues. More

Legacy Extends Beyond Exhibit
By grace chen (Nov 7, 2008)
Seventy-two years ago a fashion maestro was born. Forty-seven years ago at 25, he had established his own fashion house. Eight years ago at 63, he had retired and walked his final show. This year the fashion world lost him to brain cancer but for now, and the future, Yves Saint Laurent’s legacy will prevail. More
