City Lights with conductor Max Bragado-Darman and trombonist Charlie Vernon
November 22, 23, 2014
Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 3pm
Sunset Center, Carmel
Be transported to colorful cities in Spain, the United States, and France as we celebrate the vibrancy of city lights, lovers, joy, and sensuality. The entire concert is a tribute to the orchestra’s tremendous versatility. French composer Claude Debussy, transports us to a Fantasyland with his widely-celebrated Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun, while Maurice Ravel’s spirited Alborada del Gracioso transports us to a small city in Spain, paying tribute to his Basque heritage. Alborada del Gracioso also features the remarkable talents of the young musicians of Youth Music Monterey County.
The venerated trombonist from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Charlie Vernon, performs the signature piece written expressly for him: Chick ‘a’ Bone Checkout; giving credit to the deep and powerful aspects of the trombone and the raucous, great city of Chicago. Our second concert of the season concludes with George Gershwin’s exuberant An American in Paris, capturing both the wonder and awe that this glamorous ‘City of Light’ invokes in all who visit her.
