Set in the American wilderness as 19th-century industrialization looms, 4TRAINS explores the theme of the railroad as it relates to the destruction of the environment and the imagination.
Creating immersive, 30-foot shadows that project into cubic space, director and inventor Christine Marie takes the audience on a cinematic shadow theater journey to witness a young couple enjoying the last days of carefree frolic as structured time, toil, and trade begin to intrude upon their solitude. As the surrounding landscape changes, their lives incur hardship as they come to terms with the loss of childhood and the destruction of natural resources.
4TRAINS is an event of poetic, visual storytelling. Working behind screen and on-stage, Marie and her ensemble of actors, artists, and dancers construct live shadow theater reminiscent of silent-era cinema and enhanced by hand-built lighting that uses 3D stereoscopic technology. This wordless fable resonates with modern relevance as it reveals a nation forging full-steam into an unknowable future and invites the audience to consider the current environmental crisis in a historical, universal, and psychological context while asking; How does one live with dignity in a changing technological society in which we seem to have so little control?
