Chef Kathy Fang of the acclaimed Fang Restaurant, a stylish Chinese dining destination in the SOMA neighborhood, welcomes the Chinese New Year with an exciting culinary celebration. Fang Restaurant’s Chinese New Year’s Eve menu includes culturally significant ingredients and dish preparations, many which Chef Fang watched her father Peter Fang serve over the years at his famed House of Nanking restaurant in San Francisco. Fang Restaurant is decked out in red and gold for the special occasion, creating an especially festive atmosphere to ring in the Year of the Horse.
Chef Fang’s Year of the Horse menu selections and their meanings for the year ahead include Radish Cakes with Plum Sauce and Sesame Dressing to represent growth in the New Year; Golden Bowl, a Japanese pumpkin soup with prawns and meatball to illustrate the plentiful amounts of seafood and meat that signify a year of bounty; Eight Treasure Salad to symbolize prosperity; Sesame Noodles to illustrate long life; and Sesame Rice Balls in Glutenous Rice Soup to encourage a year that runs smoothly, like a ball. Featured cocktail is the Juju Bini, with ingredients such as honeyed dates, goji berries, vodka, and tea. The sweet flavors signal a sweet start to the Year of the Horse.
