CHICKENHEAD JOHNSON, Brass Animals, Soul Society

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Chickenhead Johnson

To consider local SF Bay Area MC, singer and songwriter Ryan Greene a prolific artist would be an understatement. Since the mid-80’s, Bay Area native, Ryan Greene has devoted his life path to music and for this, has reaped the benefits of being a tenacious and charismatic staple in the Bay Area music scene. Making the transition from graffiti writer, to graphic artist, and now arranger, composer, producer, singer and emcee, Ryan Greene is an all-in-one package, with talent and skill that begs for comparison.

Chickenhead Johnson is Ryan Greene's newest dedication. It was created with Jamie Way (Press Rewind, Quannum) as the producer. The tracks took 3 years to finalize and forming the band took even longer. It was hard for Ryan to stop employing mercenary players for his shows since the music was so flamboyant and complex. Ryan created a new persona to front the new band by emulating his father, a gospel singer from Kentucky and wearing outrageous costumes, something you don't see often in the SF Bay Area. This over the top persona allows Ryan to shine by singing confidently instead of only rapping.

There’s a lot to love about Chickenhead Johnson. First, there’s that tongue in cheek, delta blues, "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" fried to golden-brown perfection name he has. Once you hear that and chuckle, you’re rewarded with super funky, theatrical soul—no dry, tastelessness pop.

But let’s face it…most of us save nights out for dinners or weekend brunches (chicken and waffles, anyone?). The SF Clubs are closing down quick. Chickenhead Johnson is taking a stand. After a brief yet comprehensive refresher course with James Brown, Gnarls Barkley and Johnny Cash it’s time to get back in the club with your dancing partner. It’s time to heat up that club. It’s time to have some southern fried fun.

Since 2009 Chickenhead Johnson frontman Ryan Greene has been taking showmanship in San Francisco to another level. Armed with a bottomless keg of funk, outrageous costumes, and some of the tightest musicians in the city, a Chickenhead Johnson live show will get even the squarest people moving like it's the 1940's again. Fried chicken will be thrown, hearts will break, and your favorite band just won't seem to cut it anymore.

Ryan has played successful live shows with Digital Underground, Das EFX, Tom Greene, Canibus, Devin The Dude, Bun B, Gift Of Gab, Bang Data, The Jazz Mafia, Z man from One Block Radius, Raw Deluxe, Felonius, Zeph and Azeem, Living Legends (Various groups and solo acts), Broun Felinis, Oakland Faders, Stymie and the Pimp Jones Love Orchestra, Lunar Heights, Crown City Rockers, Marc Stretch and many more SF Bay Area greats with his live bands as Golden Shelltoes.

"Ryan Greene has long been an energetic force in bridging the gap between the live musician community and the beats & rhymes contingent...a versatile and talented artist with interesting musical ideas." - Eric K. Arnold for SF Weekly.
