The play is based on the writings of two women from Medieval England. Julian of Norwich (the first woman known to write a book in English) lived in a cell attached to a church in Norwich, while Margery Kempe (who wrote what is now considered the first autobiography) in nearby Lynn persuaded her husband to take a vow of celibacy so she could become a pilgrim.
Peter Oswald, who selected Cell Talk as winner of a playwriting competition held while he was resident playwright at the Globe Theatre, said this of the play: One woman rooted . . . and one wandering . . . beautiful and inspired
Shannon Hemphill from Los Gatos plays the lead role of Margery. She says: In a time when people were being burned at the stake for heresay, these women spoke their minds. The role of Margery Kempe has proved to be very demanding, hitting a range of emotions from hysterical, to sensual, to tearful remorse, to conniving, to confident.
Hemphill is joined by two actors from Santa Cruz: Rick Kuhn as her long-suffering husband John Kempe and Ali Eppy as Dame Julian.
Matt Matthews known for his work with Santa Clara Players directs and says: It’s an excellent play. Folks will enjoy it.
Dana Bagshaw studied playwriting at San Jose State, lived in England 18 years, and now lives in Santa Cruz.
Outdoor scenes with lively music from the period will be held on four consecutive Sunday afternoons, 4:00 to 5:30 pm.
