Catching the Sun Screening

SEE EVENT DETAILS
A one-time, screening of the new documentary Catching the Sun, by filmmaker Shalini Kantayya, will be happening at East Bay Center for the Arts’ Iron Triangle Theatre on September 14th at 7pm. The event is hosted by Asian Pacific Environmental Network, California Environmental Justice Alliance, Communities for a Better Environment, and Solar Richmond.

Through the stories of workers and entrepreneurs in the U.S. and China, Catching the Sun is a feature length documentary that explores the global race to a clean energy future. The film follows the hope and heartbreak of unemployed American workers seeking jobs in the solar industry, and sheds light on the path to an economically just and environmentally sustainable future. Set against the struggle to build a ‘green economy,’ Catching the Sun engages audiences in solutions to climate change and income inequality. A trailer is online at catchingthesun.tv.

Filmed in four countries over the last five years - with much of the story taking place in Richmond, California - Catching the Sun has the potential to engage new audiences in solutions to climate change and income inequality. This is not a gloom and doom climate change film. It focuses on the human stories of real people who are working towards tangible solutions. Throughout the film, Kantayya builds on a revolutionary idea: That what’s good for the polar bears can also be good for the middle class. Solving climate change can unleash innovation and transform an inefficient, polluting energy system into something radically better for our economy. Catching The Sun will leave audiences encouraged by the hope and possibility of a clean energy future, and inspired to bring that future into being. Find out more online at CATCHINGTHESUN.TV

Richmond, California and the work of Solar Richmond is featured throughout the film. Solar Richmond is a nonprofit founded in 2006 that offers free solar training and green business opportunities for low income and under-employed residents. Their mission is to catalyze transformative change that deepens the connection between people, place, and planet. They accomplish this mission by providing personal wellness and professional development workshops, solar installation training, and an introduction to clean tech and the environmental economy. According to Cheryl Vaughn, Executive Director of Solar Richmond, “The Solar Richmond experience connects wellness to work and the healing of the individual to the healing of the community, and ultimately to the healing of the planet, through the environmental economy.”
