Cascada de Flores in Concert

SEE EVENT DETAILS
A new conjunto brings life to song gems of yesteryear with voices, hands and hearts of today.

Cascada de Flores features Arwen Lawrence and Jorge Liceaga, a Mexican-American duo of song, guitar and dance, celebrating 16 years playing delicious, acoustic Latin music together. They are expertly supported by pillars of the San Francisco traditional music and latin jazz scene. Saúl Sierra-Alonso (bass) and Marco Díaz (piano and trumpet) are composers for and members of the John Santos Sextet and multi-talented percussionist Brian Rice is a member of Mike Marshall's Choro Famoso as well as co-founder of the new annual Berkeley Choro Festival. At the Freight in September with the addition of Kyla Danysh on violin, Cascada de Flores will now form a conjunto, traditionally a small orquesta.

Old Dirt, New Flowers: Coming out of the release of their fourth album Radio Flor (2014), a dive into nostalgia for the early radio days, this new conjunto journeys into uncharted waters that lap the shores of Mexico, the Spanish Caribbean and even the north with its big bands and jazz ballads. There are arrangements of old gems, some never popularized, such as a love song in Náhuatl, a merging of malagueñas from Oaxacan mixteco and flamenco styles, and one of the first Mexican danzones, played perhaps for the first time in the SF Bay area. The simple grouping of voice, guitar, violin, piano (or trumpet), bass and percussion leaves room for musical communication and improvisation. The addition of Berkeley native Kyla Danysh on violin gives the music even more depth and heartbreaking emotion. Kyla’s violin harmonizes beautifully with Marco’s trumpet on the sweet old canciones and rancheras and she jumps right into the improvised conversations with her own voice, steeped in klezmer, classical and son mexicano.

The concert at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse on Saturday, September 5th will guide you through unmapped territories while promising the reward of new arrangements of old favorites from previous albums. Join Cascada de Flores for an evening of nostalgia and adventure. The journey might be especially adventurous due to the trans-bay service of Bart being cancelled that weekend. If you’re coming from San Francisco, consider a ferry-ride! (You can also take the lifeline bus service between the Temporary Transbay Terminal in San Francisco and 19th Street in Oakland. If you drive, the Allston Way Garage next to the Freight is only $5 for the evening.)
