Central Asia Cultural Center presents “Signature Sound”
(Master Throat Singers from Tuva)
With special guest
Leonid Urjuk (visual artist)
The Central Asia Cultural Center presents the West Coast premiere of a very distinctive collaboration; CHIRGILCHIN, Master Throat Singers from Tuva will perform with special guest artist, LAURIE ANDERSON.
The program will feature each artist performing their own music, and a special collaboration between CHIRGILCHIN and ANDERSON. Noted visual artist LEONID URJUK will actualize a painting onstage during one of the musical performances.
CHIRGILCHIN is one of the new generations of artists who practice the art of throat singing, performing ancient songs accompanied by handmade instruments and wearing traditional costumes. The ensemble has appeared in concert throughout the United States, Russia, Finland, Belgium, France, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, and Canada. All of CHIRGILCHIN’s songs are in the Tuvan language.
LAURIE ANDERSON is a well-known musician, vocalist, and performance artist who first encountered CHIRGILCHIN in June 2005 at the Rubin Museum of Art (RMA). Anderson was so taken by their vocal technique that she decided to take part in the following morning’s throat-singing workshop at the Museum. This led to an invitation by Anderson to collaborate on some studio sessions later in the year. Anderson recalls, “I was immediately entranced with [CHIRGILCHIN’s] incredible sounds – both instrumental and vocal. I immediately attended their workshop and became more involved with their process. In October, through the help of the Trust for Mutual Understanding, I was able to spend two days with them in a studio in New York. These sessions were amazing and magical for me. We quickly moved into new musical territory. We bonded on several levels and began to make sounds that neither one of us would make on our own.”
The result of their collaboration will be performed for the first time on the West Coast over Thanksgiving weekend.
Presented by the Central Asia Cultural Center, Chirgilchin and special guest Laurie Anderson will perform their collaboration, as well as their individual compositions.
