Bring your dad to the Zoo free on Father's Day - June 19!

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Father’s Day weekend falls on the longest weekend of the year and San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is celebrating by highlighting the animal with the longest neck! SF Zoo has a magnificent giraffe herd of seven individuals, including a new family! “Ingrid” was born April 8 to dad “Floyd” and mom “Barbro.”

The full weekend of giraffe education coincides with World Giraffe Day, which raises awareness about the challenges giraffe face and their dwindling population numbers in the wild. In the past 10 years, four out of five Reticulated giraffes have died in Africa because of human population migration, poaching for hides, meat and tail hairs, and food insecurity which leads to hunting. Since 1999, nearly 50% of wild giraffes have been lost to these factors, leaving just 80,000 individuals. Even though population statistics are rapidly declining, giraffes are still listed as “least concern” on the IUCN Red List.

World Giraffe Day began in 2014 to start the conversation about giraffe conservation and the importance of protecting one of the most magnificent and well-known animals on earth. Momentum is building and drawing attention of scientists and researchers, but we still need to continue spreading the word.

SF Zoo is inviting everyone to “stick their necks out for giraffes” this weekend. Guests are encouraged to spend extra time visiting our giraffes and attend one or all of the four special Keeper Talks.

Keeper Talk Schedule:
10:30 – All about “Floyd” the giraffe dad (at North Overlook)
12:30 – Giraffe training demonstration (at Acacia Plaza)
2:30 – Giraffe enrichment-making (at Acacia Plaza)
4:30 – General information and conservation (Giraffe Barn)
SF Zoo is raffling several prizes and collecting donations for Reticulated Giraffe Project, which sends Kenyan children to National Reserves to see the giraffes. Its mission is similar to SF Zoo - connect, care and conserve.

" Join us as we “stick our necks out for giraffes” to help protect one of the most magnificent animals on Earth. Dads: Don't forget, you receive free admission on Sunday for #FathersDay! (photo by Marianne Hale)"
