It’s the 30th anniversary of Ian Rankin’s Detective Inspector John Rebus! In his latest outing he may have stopped smoking and drinking, but he hasn’t stopped flouting the rules. 2017 marks the thirtieth anniversary of one of crime fiction’s greatest characters, John Rebus, created by one of the world’s leading crime writers, Ian Rankin. Rebus’s anniversary coincides with the release of the much-anticipated Rather Be the Devil, Rankin’s 21st Rebus novel.
Rather Be the Devil finds John Rebus, as incapable of settling into his retirement as he is of playing by the rules, investigating a cold case from the 1970s involving a gorgeous and wealthy female socialite who was found dead in a bedroom at one of Edinburgh's most luxurious hotels. No one was ever found guilty, but the scandalous circumstances of the murder have kept the town talking for over forty years. Now, Rebus has his own reasons to investigate, but his inquiries—along with those of Malcolm Fox and Siobhan Clarke—quickly make him some very dangerous and powerful enemies who will stop at nothing to ensure that the case remains unsolved and the gossip falls on deaf ears.

Ian Rankin was born in Cardenden, Fife. His father, James, owned a grocery shop, and his mother, Isobel, worked in a school canteen. He was educated at Beath High School, Cowdenbeath. His parents were horrified when he then chose to study literature at university, expecting him to study for a trade. However, encouraged by his English teacher, he persisted and graduated in 1982 from the University of Edinburgh, where he also worked on a doctorate on Muriel Spark but did not complete it. He lived in Tottenham, London, for four years and then rural France for six while he developed his career as a novelist. Before becoming a full-time novelist, he worked as a grape picker, swineherd, taxman, alcohol researcher, hi-fi journalist, college secretary and punk musician in a band called the Dancing Pigs. Rankin lives in Edinburgh with his wife, Miranda, whom he met at university and married in 1986, and their two sons, Jack and Kit. They live near the authors JK Rowling, Alexander McCall Smith and Kate Atkinson. Rankin appears as a character in McCall Smith's 2004 novel, 44 Scotland Street.
