Mission musicians unite to save Modern Times!
Ground-breaking, down-to-earth and inspired Mission musicians come together to bring you a cornucopia of musical celebration. Together, we can save Modern Times Bookstore in the heart of our neighborhood! With:
Beauty Operators String Band
Masters of the Obvious (jazz)
Julie Dillon of Mama Elephant (folk)
Supervisor John Avalos’ legislative aide, Jeremy Pollock, handles the lead vocals for the Beauty Operators, who bring a deep love of bluegrass music and a fun-loving spirit, playing traditional bluegrass, alt-grass, punk-grass, cry-in-your-beer-grass & the occasional 80s pop cover.
The mysterious, dynamic, jazz of the Masters of the Obvious brings a joyous, old-school SF sound to Modern Times, with a touch of spoken word. This is a must-see for lovers of John Coltrane and the jazz poetry of the beatnik era. With Steve Munger (pictured) & Jamie Sanbonmatsu.
Julie Dillon helped inspire Matt Gonzalez’ energenic campaign volunteers during the 2003 mayoral race, by opening most of his campaign events. An SF folksinger & songwriter, Julie plays a collection of gritty waltzes, whispered stories, and sassy rock songs culled from her personal and vicarious life experiences. Dillon’s former non-profit, Mama Elephant, provided valuable resources to struggling local musicians for many years.
