Billy Strings

Raised in Michigan and now based in Nashville, GRAMMY Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician Billy Strings is known as one of music's most compelling artists. Since his 2017 debut, he has been awarded Best Bluegrass Album at the 63rd GRAMMY Awards, Artist of the Year at the 2022 Americana Music Awards, Entertainer of the Year and Song of the Year at the 2022 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, Best New Headliner at the 2022 Pollstar Awards, Breakthrough Artist of the Pandemic at the 2021 Pollstar Awards, named Entertainer of the Year and Guitar Player of the Year at the IBMA Awards and has performed on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," PBS' "Austin City Limits" and "Bluegrass Underground." A respected figure across all genres, Strings has also collaborated with a wide variety of artists including Post Malone, Bill Kreutzmann, Bob Weir, Luke Combs, RMR and many more.

In the few short but busy years since Billy Strings began his professional career in 2013, no other newcomer to the bluegrass scene has inspired as much excitement. Whether he's picking on a guitar, a mandolin, or a banjo, he attacks his instrument with all the fury and finesse you'd expect from a heavy-metal guitar god, which is why it's not so surprising that this young dynamo is just as quick to cite the influence of Jimi Hendrix and Tony Iommi on his wildly exciting style as he is to hail more old-school heroes like Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs.

Born William Apostol in Lansing, Michigan, in 1992, Billy Strings knew his fate was sealed when his dad bought him his first guitar in an antique store for $30. His aunt gave him his equally useful nickname when she heard what he could do with it. Though Strings was an eager learner when it came to the bluegrass lessons he got from his dad - a singer, flatpicker, and Doc Watson aficionado who filled Strings' Michigan home with music and musicians - the teenage Strings immersed himself in hard rock and heavy metal, too.

The result is a uniquely powerful approach to traditional American music that Strings first showcased on 'Fiddle Tune X' - a 2014 collection of high-speed country classics recorded with mandolin wizard Don Julin - and a self-titled 2016 EP that followed his move to Nashville. As he honed his skills playing hundreds of gigs a year, acclaim from peers and critics duly followed. The International Bluegrass Music Association awarded him the 2016 Momentum Award for Instrumentalist of the Year. A year later, Acoustic Guitar and Rolling Stone both cited him as one to watch.

Released in 2017 with an array of friends and fellow pickers like Bryan Sutton and Molly Tuttle, Strings' debut album 'Turmoil & Tinfoil' matches stunning displays of his speed and dexterity with a wide-ranging style and sensibility. On songs like the nine-minute marvel "Meet Me at the Creek," he's able to connect some of the oldest and richest varieties of American roots music to heroes like Hendrix and the Grateful Dead, to Sturgill Simpson and other modern-day mavericks who are just as eager to blur the boundaries of bluegrass as Strings is himself.
