Berkeley Folk Dancers 75th Anniversary Dance Party!

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Live Oak Park Recreation Center (see times)
Still Dancing After 75 Years

Berkeley Folk Dancers has reached a rare milestone for folk dance clubs: its 75th anniversary. It is the largest folk dancing group in America, with more than 150 members enjoying classes and dancing five nights a week, fifty weeks a year, as well as many themed parties. Last September an afternoon class was inaugurated as well. A new beginner class will start September 8 and continue every Thursday evening thereafter.

A Gala Anniversary dance party will be held on September 10. As with all our events and classes, it will take place at the recreation hall at Berkeley’s Live Oak Park, with its large sprung-wood floor and beautiful banners on the walls representing dance traditions from around the world.

The club began in the summer of 1941 with a few young couples dancing once a week. Membership grew rapidly, particularly as international folk dancing took off on college campuses in the 1960s. A few current members have been dancing ever since; new members join every year. Some of the dances go back to the club’s origins, but new dances are regularly added to the repertoire. At classes dancers are in comfortable street clothes, but at the parties they wear costumes from many countries and even some fanciful getups that exist nowhere else.

BFD has celebrated multiculturalism long before it became a word. Its enthusiastic members explore dances from over forty different countries and regions of the world, including Mexico, Asia, Israel, Turkey, the Balkan countries, Sweden, Scotland and, of course, the USA, with square dances and vintage ballroom steps. The club’s experienced teachers attend workshops and dance camps to improve skills and find new dances to bring back.
