SEE EVENT DETAILS
Community Invited to Celebrate Berkeley City College’s
40th Anniversary Fri., Oct. 17, at Downtown Berkeley Campus

BERKELEY – Community members, students, their families and friends are invited to celebrate Berkeley City College’s 40th Anniversary on Fri., Oct. 17 at the college’s downtown Berkeley campus at 2050 Center St. Two events will launch a year-long celebration of the college’s 40 years in Berkeley, first as the Berkeley Learning Pavilion, then as the Peralta College for Non-Traditional Study, then as Vista College and Vista Community College, and finally as Berkeley City College. Details are available at https://www.berkeleycitycollege.edu/wp/40th-anniversary.

The first event, organized by BCC students, takes place from Noon to 2:30 p.m. in the college’s auditorium and atrium and will feature entertainment, a panel on multimedia arts, drawings for prizes, music food and other activities. A late afternoon/evening event will follow from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. with campus tours, mural and historic dedications, presentations, music and refreshments.

A dedication at 5:15 p.m. of “From the Ground Up/Desde las raices,” a stunning new community mural, directed by BCC instructor Tirso Araiza and designed by True Colors Mural Project/BCC students, with Eduardo Pineda, takes place in the college’s atrium. Contributing artists included internationally known muralist and BCC instructor Juana Alicia Araiza, Rob Gibson, Miguel-Angel Mondragon-Ayala Bounce-Perez, Nadya Voynovskaya and community volunteers. Beginning in fall 2013, BCC student artists developed, and in spring 2014 implemented, this tribute to the history of BCC and Berkeley, the community that helped to inspire and build Berkeley City College. The mural also serves as an affirmation of the City of Berkeley’s and BCC’s contributions to East Bay social justice movements.

Music, films, refreshments, and presentations by Peralta Community College District Chancellor Jose Ortiz, BCC President Deborah Budd, Vista and BCC alumni, Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, State Senator Loni Hancock and Assembly Member Nancy Skinner, to name a few, will take place in the college’s auditorium and atrium. Members of BCC Student Ambassador Corps will lead community members on campus tours, which will include viewing a new photographic timeline of BCC’s 40 years in Berkeley.

Berkeley City College is part of the Peralta Community College District which serves the communities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Piedmont. The district also includes College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College. In addition to providing two-year programs that prepare students for long-term educational goals, Peralta also offers specialized life-long learning opportunities to Bay Area residents.
