Bay City Blues w/ Mitch Woods & Special Guest: Annie Sampson

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Bay City Blues is our weekly showcase of world class Blues music and superb instrumental talent. This event is a celebration of the Blues in all its forms and an adventure into the depth of a national genre. Hosted by the nationally recognized Mitch Woods & his All-Star cast of Musicians, every week they invite a new special guest to accompany them on stage and present new, upcoming, & old talent from the blues world! Bay City Blues is our honorarium and exploration into the Blues genre, it is a special event in which we all get to help, share, & “Preserve the Blues."

About Annie Sampson:

The love of music pervades every note Annie Sampson sings. The youngest of 12 children, her early years were spent in the fertile musical climate of rural Louisiana surrounded by a family of teachers and ministers who sang together as a way of life. Her special gifts were first recognized at age five when she won a church talent show. Annie has continued to electrify, move and delight audiences ever since.

Annie Sampson's unique approach to song - whether a blues, a rock tune, a country & western ballad or a modem folk classic, was honed in her youth by singing in Bay Area church and school choirs. She then landed a principal part in the hit musical Hair at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. When the popular rock group Stoneground recruited her to become lead singer, she left the show and joined the group for a series of national and international tours. Buoyed by the popularity of their four Warner Brothers albums, Annie and Stoneground played the gamut of venues - from the Fillmore West and Winterland to Oxford University and the Olympia Theatre in Paris with stops at every major American and European city and campus in between.

About Mitch Woods and friends:

Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88s have been the torchbearers of a great American blues musical heritage, not for three years but three decades. Taking their inspiration from the great jump n’ boogie outfits of the late 40s and early 50s, they breathe fresh life into the music that gave birth to rock n’roll. Woods styled his group after the jumpin’ n’ jivin’, shoutin’ n’ honkin’, pumpin’ n’ poundin’ bands of Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Joe and Jimmy Liggins, Amos Milburn, and Roy Milton. Adding a healthy dose of New Orleans rhythm and blues, piledrivin’ piano, and some of his own contemporary playful lyrics, Woods and His Rocket 88s forge their own brand of music they call “rock-a-boogie.”

While most current artists who do New Orleans music focus on either Meters-style funk or modern brass-band sounds, Woods is one of the very few who take it back to the 1950s. Through the power of his vocal and keyboard delivery and his employment of world-class musicians from the city itself, he succeeds brilliantly in keeping the tradition burning brightly. ~ Lee Hildebrand
