Battle-rap has a reputation of being mean-spirited, homophobic and sexist--and maybe that isn’t completely unwarranted. Yet, the battle-rap world is oddly accepting of any person willing to hop in the ring and spar. Take Dallas-based MC No Shame, who is preparing to trade barbs with local rhymesmith Joe Cutter at Battle of the Zae III this Saturday. The openly transgender battle-rapper is as foul-mouthed, confrontational and brutal as anyone else in the battle circuit. When her opponents make fun of her gender identity, her comebacks are so good they surely regret even going there. The headlining battle will pit event organizer Dirtbag Dan against Tiger Ty.
