Bad Rabbits: Get ready to dance and let your funk flag fly with Boston's own, Bad Rabbits. The band's influences are vast -- from R&B to funk to post rock -- and it shows with every live set filled with soaring vocals, heavy riffs, and funk-influenced rhythms. Bad Rabbits members all attended Northeastern, where they played in various bands, including an experimental metal band and a hard rock/jam band, before linking up. The five-piece originally called themselves the Eclectic Collective, which is a fitting description for the Bad Rabbits' sound. You'll see the Bad Rabbits in slick suits one moment, and in everyman attire (okay, punkish jackets with Glassjaw patches) the next -- but the live performance is always consistently solid, and might even have a synchronized dance breakdown if you're lucky. Sunshiney, optomistic lyrics with a good dose of sex, make the band a perfect party option, or ideal for cheering you up when you're stuck in traffic. Bad Rabbits has traversed the nation on Warped Tour (which seems like a weird place for a funky pop band) and was the backing band for legendary rapper Slick Rick, a job that gives you instant cred. The band frontman, Dua Boakye does acrobatic rock singing right, hitting major notes with a both a sweetness and a slight snarl. But the music, overall, is a sexy blend of all the greats that make you dance and think at the same time: Prince, Sly, and even some Bad Brains (who the band has opened for). The Bad Rabbits are doing this pop stuff right, with a good dose of funk, punk, and fun.
