Axis Dance Performance & Dis/Play Artists Panel

SEE EVENT DETAILS
DIS/PLAY, a group exhibition on view March 24 – April 23, 2015, centers the perspectives of artists with and without disabilities who claim and define their own identities, experiment, and make their own rules.

Dig deeper into the themes of DIS/PLAY with docent-led tours, a performance by AXIS Dance Company and a panel discussion featuring dancers and exhibiting visual and media artists. The panel probes the limits of disability as a social construct and the ways that “performance” is an embedded and important facet of the disability experience.

Our free-form discussion may illuminate common misconceptions and misunderstandings, and aims to challenge us all to think beyond our own persistent assumptions. From the concept of “passing” to the subtleties of exclusion and discrimination, we will ask: How might the notion that disability has a 'performance' aspect be useful in the arts landscape? How might such questions inform our understanding of disability culture?
