California Poetry and City of One
By Alex Lash (Nov 8, 2004)
Past and present. Classic and modern. Forgotten and future. For a broad taste of California's poetry of the last 150 years and for the next 50, two books together are essential.

The first is California Poetry: From the Gold Rush to the Present, a sweeping compendium of old favorites, lost gems and difficult decisions co-edited by Dana Gioia, Sonoma County resident and chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts. The second, City of One: Young Writers Speak to the World, commemorates the tenth anniversary of WritersCorps, an organization that fosters creative writing, arts and literacy among poor and at-risk youth. More

Sure, you have a novel in you, but can you write 50,000 words in thirty days? Join Chris Baty's Nanowrimo project and find out.
By Alex Lash (Nov 12, 2004)
For some people November means a slow descent into winter. For others it's turkey and football. For a growing band of giddy writers, November is synonymous with late nights, bad prose and group therapy.

Their guru is 31-year-old Kansas City native Chris Baty, who dreamed up an absurd literary exercise while working for an obscure San Francisco dot-com in the midst of the late-nineties boom. The task Baty and friends set for themselves was to write 50,000 words in 30 days, no matter how embarrassing the result. Now a freelance writer in Oakland, he blames the masochistic project on the era... More

At the annual Dickens Christmas Fair, kids and adults can hear the author tell his own tales and carols
By Alex Lash (Nov 14, 2004)
Time was, Charles Dickens sold out theatres faster than Britney Spears. And he didn't need to lip-synch. In his time, Dickens was perhaps as beloved for his public readings as for his writings, which he brought to the public, including his American fans, for much of his later working life. And starting this weekend, you can see him live. More

Foreign and Local Poets Read Original Work at S.F. Festival
By Alex Lash (Nov 20, 2004)
Under the auspices of the Poetry Center, Dickison and his staff have organized three gatherings of Other Words, formerly known as the Euro-San Francisco Poetry Festival, since 1999. Edition No. 3 starts Thursday, September 25 and brings together 17 poets from around the world -- Russia, Ireland, Italy, France, Finland, Germany, Sweden, Greece, Mexico and the U.S. -- to read onstage in their native tongues with accompanying English translation when necessary. More
Museums
By Amber Whiteside (Nov 16, 2004)
A comprehensive body of Tania Candiani's work fills MACLA's recently renovated and expanded gallery, transforming it into a funhouse of the female form, a futile cycle of binge and purge. Pepto Bismal pink exercise machines, a punching bag swinging like a pendulum in a boxing ring, a looped video of a fitness instructor demonstrating his routine, and so many distorted lines and protuberances of women's bodies come at the viewer with a relentlessness that rivals the commercial world outside. More

From the Inside Out
By Amber Whiteside (Jan 28, 2005)
It's more than likely you've heard something of 'XXX', Timothy Greenfield-Sanders recent series of 30 porn star portraits. Beyond an exhibition (that opened at the Mary Boone Gallery in October and is currently at John Berggruen), the project entails a hardbound book, in which contributors' pontifications on porn (Gore Vidal, Lou Reed, Karen Finley, and Salman Rushdie among them) are interspersed through the pages of portraits. The project is also the subject of 2 behind-the-scenes documentaries (one by HBO, the other 60 Minutes), and an audio track to boot. More

Designer Chocolate
By Amy Sherman (Aug 19, 2004)
In San Francisco, Union Square is where you'll find fashion, quality, luxury and even fine art. It's also the perfect address for Richart, a chocolatier who has redefined chocolate in very similar ways. Just like the major fashion houses, France-based Richart comes out with new "collections" based on the seasons, several times a year. In addition, they feature seven families of chocolate- roasted, fruity, citrus, herbal, spiced and balsamic. Each individual chocolate resembles a mini mosaic tile, decorated with a delicate colored pattern to identify its flavor... More
