Movies
By Anhoni Patel (Aug 20, 2004)
I'm sitting here at my desk trying to think of a way to intro my film review for Woody Allen's new movie Anything Else and I can't think of a word to write. Which I believe says something integral about the film and not my own writing abilities. Usually it takes me about two seconds to whip out a snappy line or two. But now I'm just stuck. What do I say? -Christina Ricci does a good job of creating a character that you hate? Allen anxiously whines as per usual? It's interesting that the guy from American Pie finally decided to do a "serious" movie? That's no way to intro a film review. Oh well More

Auggie Rose explores identity
By Anhoni Patel (Aug 20, 2004)
Wouldn't it suck if you suddenly died one day and no one else even noticed? Now what if some random guy took over your life and the world didn't skip a beat? Perhaps if you were some high-falootin' celebrity constantly bathing in the limelight, it'd be more difficult for another person to impersonate you. But if you were just a Mr. Joe Nobody, it would be easy, right? More

Baise-Moi is not for the weak of heart
By Anhoni Patel (Aug 20, 2004)
If you don't at least squirm in your seat while watching the French film Baise-moi (which literally means "Fuck Me" or, more exactly, "Rape Me"), then you are as dead inside as the protagonists. The movie comes with a disclaimer, which reads: "This film contains prolonged sex scenes of an explicit nature and scenes of graphic violence, which some viewers may find shocking and disturbing." Indeed, this film is extremely explicit and has been banned in France as well as Canada. There are people who do not want you to watch it. More

It's difficult to blend political critique, philosophical discourse and treatises on the meaning of life without an end product that seems heavy-handed and pretentious; however, director Denys Arcand manages to do it smoothly. The terminal illness of Remy (Remy Girard), a hedonistic retired professor, brings the characters from Decline of the American Empire together once again as they reminisce about the good old days where you could have as many lovers as you wanted and the world was yours to deconstruct. Remy reconciles with his son and makes peace with the process of aging in this poignant farewell. More

Soccer Fans Unite!
By Anhoni Patel (Aug 20, 2004)
We all could use some feel-good warm & fuzzy vibes right now. Something that makes you temporarily forget the state of the world and drown out the omnipresent war coverage. The comedy Bend it Like Beckham is the movie to do just that. More

Never underestimate an overachiever
By Anhoni Patel (Aug 20, 2004)
I can count the number of Asian American lead roles on one hand (independent movies shown only at film fests notwithstanding). And that includes the stereotyped ones where the girl walks around being all "exotic" and the guy runs around like a fumbling buffoon. That is a sad state of affairs More

...finds itself on the worst movies of 2004 list
By Anhoni Patel (Aug 20, 2004)
This movie is so bad it's scary. Seriously, there are points during the movie when you feel like you've entered the Twilight Zone or another dimension full of zombies where movies like The Big Bounce are supposed to pass for entertainment, a world where studios actually cough up money to make these celluloid travesties while they pass over rich scripts with promise. More

Black and White is shallow but fun
By Anhoni Patel (Aug 20, 2004)
James Toback's new film Black and White is a fast-paced quick-talking and entertaining glimpse into the relationships between a group of black gangsters cum rappers and white rich kids. It is supposed to be a dialogue on race relations, but it is more of a bullshit session on black and white stereotypes and hip hop than anything else. More

Director Deepa Mehta, who has made two of the films in my (albeit working) Top Ten Greatest Movies Of All Time List - Fire and Earth - has fallen from filmography grace with this shoddy, haphazard romantic comedy (I use the word "comedy" lightly because it is not funny at all) about a wealthy Indo-Canadian, Rahul (Rahul Khanna), who scrambles to find a suitable date/mate to bring to his sister Twinky's (Rishma Malik) wedding after his white girlfriend, much to the delight of his family, dies in a freak accident. He meets a mysterious woman named Sue (Lisa "I'm very good-looking" Ray), whom he assumes is a hooker, and pays her to pretend that More

What director John Sayles does best is present to you very complicated ideas through inter-connected narratives without any easy explanations or neat and tidy endings. Life isn't neat and neither are his films. An all-star ensemble cast in which each and every single actor nails their role: Lili Taylor, Rita Moreno, Daryl Hannah, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Marcia Gay Harden, Mary Steenburgen and Susan Lynch, brings the story to life. Six white women, only one of whom can actually speak Spanish, travel to an unidentified Latin country to adopt babies (as one of the locals quips, "One of our greatest exports"). Due to some bureaucratic scheme, they are More
