The Wild Rumpus Starts
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.
How much you appreciate Spike Jonze’s beautiful adaptation of author Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are might depend, more than anything else, on your willingness to be challenged. Unlike many movies aimed at young audiences, this one is neither facile nor sugarcoated. It is uncompromising in its intelligence and unflinching in its depiction of the downside of childhood. More

All Grown Up
Women in hip hop don’t have it easy, just ask anyone in the business. Keeping it real is difficult when most female rappers are anything but. Dolled up into sex objects, or shot up with testosterone, hip hop is seriously void of real females. Maybe this explains one of the reasons Kid Sister’s album has been so heavily anticipated. She’s not trying to impress anyone with something she’s not, rather she says things like “I’m gonna fart on Usher.” Not to mention, she has skills. The Chicago rapper has a style of her own, and as SF Station chatted with her, it became clear it’s more than just music. More

Steampunked Italian
Flour + Water = pasta and pizza. Yes, the name for this place is fitting enough; all that’s needed for an excellent meal is this simple combination…with a touch of sauce and garlic. The concept itself is simple: A neighborhood space that provides diners with tasty Italian bites: crisp Neapolitan pizzas made in an authentic Italian oven, fresh hand-rolled pastas, and house-cured salumi. Not the Odalisques of Old
The first solo show at the newly opened Fabric8 Gallery, Altered States, Dreamscapes, and Underworlds exhibits the alluring yet playful works of Ursula Xanthe Young, a native of England and long-time Bay Area resident. A curious combination of street and fantasy, Young’s works feature wide-eyed (though not necessarily innocent), pursed-lipped beauties among backdrops of city skylines and climbing vines. More

Pork and Pints Just Right
It’s not your typical creaky, dark pub where the lads come to brood. The Marina’s The Tipsy Pig, where the noise level is ear-splitting, is bursting at the seams with beautiful people -- guests and staff alike. What else would be expected of a watering hole and gastropub from the Vintage 415 team (Umami, Mamacita, Blue Barn) who have mastered a simple formula: great drinks and surprisingly good food in a lively atmosphere. Another Coen Brothers Masterpiece
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
Less a laugh-inducing absurdist farce than a head-scratching existential black comedy, A Serious Man belongs in the same category as the Coen Brothers better (or even best) films. More
