Art exhibit to illuminate theme of human trafficking

SEE EVENT DETAILS
More than 77 pieces of art, created around the theme of human trafficking as part of the Before Our Very Eyes campaign, will be on display April 14- May 15 at 13 different venues in Redwood City.

The exhibit will set the scene for the Human Trafficking Awareness Day, which will take place May 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the San Mateo County History Museum and Courthouse Square in Redwood City. The free, countywide event will explore the effects of modern-day slavery in San Mateo County neighborhoods. A Survivors and Friends exhibit at the museum will feature art by survivors of human trafficking and artists who work with them.

“Since antiquity, art has had the power to touch deep places with profound messages,” said artist Belinda Carr of Redwood City, the curator for the Before Our Very Eyes campaign. “Using solely the intellect as the vehicle of communication, those messages sometimes struggle to find their voice. This exhibit leverages art to enhance public understanding and empathy for the those ensnared by human trafficking here in our neighborhoods.”

Unleashed Gallery at 2744 Broadway, Redwood City, will host an artists’ reception from 5:30-8:30 p.m. May 13, and the Main Gallery, 1018 Main St., Redwood City, will display a large photomontage of all the pieces. A binder will list the locations where the originals will be.

Among the participating artists are Beth Mostovoy, Brian Clifford, Christie Smith, Joyce Savre, Erin Ashford and Carr, Redwood City; Annette Passalacqua, San Mateo; Kay Craven, Portola Valley; Maggie Vittori, San Carlos; Nancy Marguiles, Montara; Doris Arrington, Hillsborough; Susan Switzer, Burlingame; Zdenka Bleile, Woodside; Pearl Kruss, Mountain View; Rebecca Osgood, Palo Alto; Jill Ranes, Santa Clara; Joan Spencer, Campbell; Judy Nightingale Person, Sunnyvale; Carol Johnson, San Jose; and Aliza Amar, San Diego.

The venues will include The Art Center of Redwood City and San Carlos, the downtown Redwood City Public Library, Back Yard Coffee, Crouching Tiger, Kaiser Hospital, Main and Elm, Peacebank Yoga Studio, Portobello Grill, Suisha House, Talk of Broadway, The Main Gallery, Unleashed Gallery and University Art.
