| Description Charlotte Gainsbourg received the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, where this dark and harrowing drama by writer-director Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves, Dogville, Dancing in the Dark) became the most controversial film this year. Gainsbourg is She, who blames herself for the sudden death of her child. Willem Dafoe is He, her husband, and a therapist who takes her to the remote forest cabin they call "Eden," intending to supervise her recovery personally. But paradise is decidedly lost in von Trier's psychological horror story, and as depression descends to insanity, dreamlike apparitions appear to confirm "Nature is Satan's church." Beautifully photographed by Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire), this powerful, confrontational film has sharply divided critics and undoubtedly will its audiences. However, as Roger Ebert wrote: "I cannot dismiss this film. It is a real film. It will remain in my mind." Unrated: Contains explicit sex and violence. |
