It's a fact, Portland is filled to the brim with indie-rock bands. So much so that art-rock quintet Animal Eyes, whose members grew up in Homer, Alaska (population 4,000), dreamed of one day relocating to this land of indie-rock plenty. And they did, but having spent their formative years with nothing to do but stare at crazy wildlife gave them some offbeat ideas on how they should approach indie-rock. They have all the gleaming, lush guitar work, atmospheric synth sound and general psychedelic nature of such indie heavyweights as Grizzly Bear, Deerhunter and Tame Impala but they also mix in some West African polyrhythms, experimental guitar chords, and bizarre time signatures. And their vocal work is superb: gorgeous yet eerie. (Aaron Carnes)
