| Not What You Think and So Much Better While the title of this film makes it sound as if it's some kind of costume drama, be assured that The King of Scotland is anything but. There are many things I can say about this movie. But they all come down to two things: 1. This is one of the best movies of the year and 2. Forest Whitaker better at least get nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor.More | | The New Army of God If you think the religious right in this country are gaining more and more control, you would be correct. The startling documentary Jesus Camp will surely erase all doubts otherwise. Directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (The Boys of Baraka), the film follows several evangelical Christian children as they engage in their faith and attend a Christian summer camp.More | | Paradise Lost Directed by Frank E. Flowers, Haven, is one of those indelible films that you just can't get out of your head. It's a quiet, unassuming yet powerful film that creeps up on you unknowingly. With the exception of the bit of press it has been receiving because one of its cast members also happens to be a young heartthrob, the movie has none of the standard elements that make Hollywood shine its spotlight upon it. No big budget. No big stars. No big catch. Just good storytelling. So good, Haven might just be one of the biggest sleeper hits of the year.More | | No More Surprises Anyone that's turned thirty has gone through it. The dreaded Saturn Return. If you don't know what I mean then you obviously haven't had to struggle through it. To those of you currently embroiled in this period of self-doubt, reflection and self-analysis I say: stay strong my brothers and sisters! You will prevail and be a lot happier afterwards. But be wary -- pain and suffering in large doses are ahead. Unfortunately, this milestone is exactly what the protagonist in the much anticipated The Last Kiss is facing.More | | Entertaining Trickery As all magicians know there are two kinds of audience members. One who constantly questions every move and whose mind never stops trying to figure out all the tricks. And the other kind who simply sits back and enjoys the show with all the wonder of 5-year old. It's safe to say that filmmaking is a kind of magic show and that filmgoers could also be classified in such a way. In the case of The Illusionist, if you are the former type of filmgoer you will most likely find it predictable and somewhat dull. However, if you are the latter kind, you will find the film quite entertaining.More | | Lackluster and Way Too Long The first film in this trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, was surprisingly funny and entertaining. Unfortunately, its follow-up is neither. Clocking in at 150 minutes (which really feels more like four hours), the movie loses steam long before the credits roll.More | | The Finals Finally Arrive With Germany the home team upset in their semi-final against the Italian Azzurri and France surprising everyone with their beautifully orchestrated defeat of reigning champions Brazil in the quarterfinals and following win over Portugal in the semi-finals, this Sunday's final will be the much anticipated culmination of a month-long soccer marathon full of both surprises and predictability.More | | A New Interpretation This strange little movie is a new interpretation of the famous epic poem "Beowulf". Written in Old English around 1100 A.D, the tale tells the feats of a great warrior from a Germanic tribe called the Geats, settled in what is now Sweden, named Beowulf. The story was handed down through the oral story tradition over half a century earlier and remains as one the most important pieces of work in English literature.More | | The Demanding World of High Fashion Directed by David Frankel (best known for his work directing episodes of some of HBO's most critically-acclaimed series including "Entourage", "Sex and the City" and "Band of Brothers") The Devil Wears Prada, an adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's best-selling novel, is as light and fluffy as its literary counterpart.More | | Putting the "Q" back in Queer It's 2006 and we're putting the "F" back in fabulous! After a month of build-up, the city will finally explode in a gay extravaganza full of one of the country's best parades, tons of parties and a host of queer-oriented events. To help you navigate your way through San Francisco's biggest weekend, SF Station has picked the biggest and best events for you to enjoy Pride to the fullest!More |
