"Angels in America" On Stage at Foothill College

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Foothill College presents Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, written by Tony Kushner, May 28–June 14 in the Lohman Theatre at the campus in Los Altos Hills.

Directed by Foothill Theatre Arts Instructor Bruce McLeod, the play is performed in two parts, including the full staging of Part One: Millennium Approaches, as well as the dramatic reading of Part Two: Perestroika. This new version, which was streamlined by Kushner in a 2014 production, is a fantastic journey anchored by two couples. Audiences are advised that both presentations contain strong language along with mature sexual themes, and may not be appropriate for those under age 16.

Kushner’s dialogue is intense, layered and often humorous as the play's characters navigate the minefields of AIDS, Reagan politics and their own conflicting needs.

Prior Walter is dealing with an AIDS infection as Louis, his lover, is struggling with his ability to be Prior's caregiver as the disease progresses. Joe, a lawyer and Republican, can’t reconcile his attraction to men with his Mormon faith while his wife, Harper, fantasizes of another life while high on valium.

The ability of these and other characters to adapt as the social and political landscape around them dramatically shifts provides the real power of this Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play. Within the political and social upheaval of the era, the play presents an astounding view of relationships under extreme stress and the triumph of the human spirit.

Part One: Millennium Approaches will be staged May 28 and June 11 at 7:30 p.m.; May 29, 30, June 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 8 p.m.; and May 31, June 7, 10 and 14 at 2 p.m. A dramatic reading of Part Two: Perestroika will be presented June 4, 7, 10 and 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Foothill's production of Angels in America features Alex Perez, Dan Martin, Sophia Naylor, Carla Befera, Marley Westley, Tim Garcia, Clinton Williams, Davied Morales, Layla Salazar, Brittany Pisoni, Seamus O’Connell, Giovanni Maciel and Rozlyn MacDermott.

Tickets are $20, general; $15, students, seniors and Foothill employees; and $10, OwlCard holders. Purchase tickets online at foothill.edu/theatre/tickets.php or by phone at (650) 949-7360.
