AFROLICIOUS:

Afrolicious has established itself as both one of the most legendary weekly parties in San Francisco, and of the top live/electronic bands on the scene. Started as a weekly dance party featuring DJs and brothers Pleasuremaker and Senor Oz alongside percussionists, MCs and horn players, and an amazing crowd from day one. Over the years it has evolved as founding DJ/Producer Pleausremaker (Joe McGuire) alongside brother Senor Oz (Oz McGuire) hooked up with some of the most exciting personalities in the Bay Area music scene and started writing original music under the alias Afrolicious.

Around 2010 the live Pleasuremaker band started including some of this new ‘Afrolicious’ material and added more of the percussionists and vocalists from the weekly party to form what is now the Afrolicious band. Between their weekly party and sound system shows that involve the brothers DJing alongside live percussion, they also have a 8-12 piece live band that emphasizes the organic elements, instrumentation, and energy of a live ensemble combined with club heavy beats and textures the weekly party has come to be known for.

CANDELARIA:

In 2006, three musicians from across the Americas found themselves in the Bay Area – scouring Craigslist for other like-minded musicos, ready to take their musicianship to a different level – and though they didn’t know it at the time, these folks were on the verge of creating a previously unknown style of music: cumbia-dub. Bassist Daniel Yockey (Wisconsin, U.S.), conguero Carlos Mario Aguirre (Colombia) and gaitero / guitarist Adley Penner (Canada) met while playing with Colombian folklore group, Aluna. Inspired by the raw, rootsy rhythms of cumbia, yet growing restless with only playing covers, they began to experiment with the style. They applied dub studio techniques and reggae style bass lines to traditional cumbia and other Colombian rhythms, developing a completely unique style of dance music with electronic sensibilities and a raw, live feel. Though this ground-breaking idea was first conceived in 2006, it did not reach full fruition until the autumn of 2009, when Candelaria was formed under its current name in the heart of Oakland: the Fruitvale district.

Along with Daniel and Adley, former Fuga drummer Rafael Herrera, former La Colectiva percussionist Ali Luna, and a previously unknown singer Stephani Garcia Candelaria were welcomed to the group. With this new lineup locked in, the band’s sound began to evolve. While still rooted in cumbia and reggae, Candelaria began to develop a unique sound all their own, all the while transforming venues, festivals, and audiences with their dynamic and infectiously groovy performances.

The band will be celebrating the release of their second album "Bien Good" at GAMH!
